I ask everyone, why do you care? I look at the chess engine as a tool to improve my chess regardless if it is a clone with better, more efficient code that the engine it was cloned from.

I think the only time cloning matters is for tournaments when the prize are something tangible and has value, like money.

It is easily seen that, there is a panic in commercial chess world to see a stronger and free program.
How come the copy can be stronger??

It seems that Rybka had enough time to learn from free and open source Robbolito family (Firebird-…)to include in Rybka 3 and 4!

Now the ban is weaker!!!

I am not in a position to comment on the truth or otherwise of that comment, but I do know that the concept of software code being reused is as old as the software industry itself.

I think Vas has aknowledged that he received extensive help from various people while Rybka was being developed. If you read someone else’s code and then implement their ideas, but do not copy their code verbatim is it piracy?

Banning an engine without proof that it is an illegal copy was more than I could take. My guess is that the large providers of online chess did what they did to protect commercial interests, rather than prevent piracy.
