Chess Online Against Computer

Ever Wanted to Play Chess Against a Computer Online?

Here is a chance to play chess online against a basic chess computer.  This computer chess program was written to run in flash, but it still gives a decent game. This is a free game, uses a 3d chess board and needs no download. Could it be the best free online chess program out there?

If you want a tougher game then try some of the other computer chess engine download links on this site. Almost any UCI chess engine from Jim Ablett’s page will give an incredibly strong game, or you could download the Crafty chess computer which is also available with its own graphical user interface.

ATTENTION

If you are experiencing difficulty loading the game and playing chess online read this.

To play chess you must both install flash and then enable it your browser.

For example, in Chrome, after flash installation click on settings -> “advanced” and scroll down to “content settings” click this and then enable flash there.

You must complete BOTH downloading flash and enabling it in your browser for the chess game to work and be visible!

If after performing both actions the game still does not appear, then hard refresh your browser cache (control-F5 on Chrome).

Wow. I’m not an experienced chess player, but I know I’m not bad at it at all and I still found myself having a hard time beating this AI, but I did it!! I gotta say, on medium difficulty it’s definitely possible to win (fairly easy even) but it’s still quite harder to do so compared to playing with most people, because it anticipates almost every move you make and rarely makes mistakes.

You capture the pawn as if it had only moved forward 1 square. This must be done immediately after the opposing pawn has moved 2 squares past your pawn on the 5th rank.

Hullo, this is a very good game, thank you, but I was wondering: it does allow for castling, right? I can’t figure out how to get the proper pieces to move and I know I haven’t touched the king or the rook before so they should be able to castle.

Click on the king and all legal moves for the piece will show up in green. If castling is available then it will show a green highlight TWO squares in that direction. Move the king these two squares and the rook will automatically move to the correct square if castling is a legal move.

Touching a piece by selecting it does not invalidate other moves in this online chess game, although it would invalidate other moves in a tournament situation. The chess program here is very forgiving to encourage play and learning.

      Hope this helps.

One of the unfortunate side effects of chess programs and chess apps on phones etc., is that it is very easy to cheat when playing a human over the internet. While only a small minority of chess players indulge in cheating it is extremely frustrating for a new player to be beaten in 12 moves or less by someone whose online rating is 1,000 elo but who is cheating by using a chess app.

My aim on this site is to encourage new players to learn chess, not to provide frustration for them. The computer never cheats, as such I think it is an ideal opponent for those new to the game. It is likely that I may never institute human vs human play on this site as I cannot currently see a way to protect honest players effectively.

I was winning a game, when the computer moved a pawn past one of mine, and my pawn disappeared! This happened every time I replayed the move, so I had to give up the game. Needs to be fixed!!
