Chess Online Against Computer

Ever Wanted to Play Chess Against a Computer Online?

Here is a chance to play chess online against a basic chess computer.  This computer chess program was written to run in flash, but it still gives a decent game. This is a free game, uses a 3d chess board and needs no download. Could it be the best free online chess program out there?

If you want a tougher game then try some of the other computer chess engine download links on this site. Almost any UCI chess engine from Jim Ablett’s page will give an incredibly strong game, or you could download the Crafty chess computer which is also available with its own graphical user interface.

ATTENTION

If you are experiencing difficulty loading the game and playing chess online read this.

To play chess you must both install flash and then enable it your browser.

For example, in Chrome, after flash installation click on settings -> “advanced” and scroll down to “content settings” click this and then enable flash there.

You must complete BOTH downloading flash and enabling it in your browser for the chess game to work and be visible!

If after performing both actions the game still does not appear, then hard refresh your browser cache (control-F5 on Chrome).

En passant – a legal move in chess.

How come your practice games are not always available upon turning on the program? Sometimes (rarely) it is there, but most of the time it goes right into the PLAY MODE. I’d like to play practice games (openers, mid-games, end-games). I learn a lot from your practice games. I know that some of your practice games are FREE. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to pay your subscription practice games. I’ll be happy with the free ones. – Joe, the poor avid chess player!

This site charges no subscription and never has. The “pay” option on the chess game does not go to me or this website. It is a link to the developer.

There is a fault with game. I move my black pawn from h7 to h5. White (AI) has pawn on g5. White moves pawn to h6 but takes my black pawn at h5 off the board. What the? I swear it has been doing it a few times but it seems only when I move my pawn from the starting line forward 2 squares. I have just been assuming it was my mistake as I clicked on the 1 square (until I worked out I could undo moves which has verified the fault).

It is not a fault, it is a move in chess called en passant.

One day I will write a page explaining it…one day…

Flash is still commercially available despite its limitations. For some people flash is the only plugin they have installed on their browsers. A flash chess game made perfect sense when this game was developed. The next version will be using current software technology. No big deal. 🙂

This flash chess game won’t be updated, sorry. However, there will be a new version of computer chess on this site later this summer. After my exams! 🙂
